Have you ever been asked this question? There are no right or wrong answers but how can we possibly see out 5 years when we don’t know what is going to happen to us tomorrow?
As I watched the Olympics, the most fascinating thing to me was hearing the stories of the athletes and where they were 4 years ago – how they battled from their successes and failures to get to the Olympics. I’m sure if you asked them back then where they were going to be in four years they would say, “Right here, at the Olympics,” but did they really know?
The real question would be to ask them what it took to get them there.
High performers are not successful because they know where there are going to be sometime in the future. Rather, they have an understanding of the actions they must take now to get them to their intended destination.
As you think about the “5 years” question, do you know what tasks or actions you need to do now to get you to where you want to go? Are you committed to these tasks to get you to where you want to be?
The clearer you are on your short-term tasks, the greater success you will have with your long-term goal.
So, the next time you get asked the question “Where will you be in 5 years?” you will be prepared to answer not only the vision but the steps you plan to do to get you there.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
