Don't be a BSer

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

Do you know what the opposite of being straightforward and honest is? Yep, the flip side of the honest, forthright person is the bullshitter.

I know this might sound harsh, but we all know there is nothing worse than someone who tells tall tales. My opposition to it isn’t as much about their dishonesty with others as it is about their dishonesty with themselves.

To be the best person you can be, you need to be brutally honest, starting with yourself. I had a coach who used to say to me, “People who talk a lot of BS aren’t coachable. The problem is, the more they talk the more they start to believe what they are saying. They start to shade the truth to conform to it, which makes the BS even more dangerous.”

In business and in life, to truly be successful and continue to grow, we need to be honest with ourselves. We can’t get caught up in trying to be who we are not. When we do this, we are not hurting the people around us because they see through what is going on. Who we actually hurt is ourselves. When this happens, we will never reach the potential we were meant to achieve.

Next time you want to BS someone, make sure it’s in a card game or a friendly sports match, because in life the only one you really are bullshitting is yourself.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
