Who uses GPS, Google Maps, or Waze when you drive? Of course, you do. Who doesn’t?
You just put in where you want to go, and it tells you step by step how to get there and exactly how long it’s going to take.
But GPS is ruining the rest of our lives. Now we think if we set our destination, there is some magical tool that is going to tell us how to get there.
Unfortunately, life doesn’t work this way. We can’t just put our destination in and be told the route, time, and turn by turn instructions.
I constantly see people struggle because they know where they want to go, what they want their new software to do, or new processes they would like implemented, but they don’t know how to get there. Wouldn’t it be great if we just put in all our coordinates and a road map came out? Yes, it would. But unlike GPS, there is just so much more to life that needs to be taken into account.
Most young people never had the pleasure of pulling out a paper map and figuring out how to get to a destination. But for those of us who remember that, we remember that we could see the route on paper, but we never knew what was going to stand in our way.
It’s the same with goals, projects, and life plans. We can see the path forward, but there always will be obstacles and challenges on the way there. The key is relying on our best judgement and experience to guide us.
Nothing in life is certain and just like driving without a GPS, you never know exactly what is around the corner. But if you enjoy the ride, hopefully you will make it to your destination safe and sound. I just hope not having a GPS won’t stop you from venturing out.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
