Have The Courage To Suck At Something

One of the best lessons I learned recently was that it is ok to suck at something. Over the past few months, I’ve taken on the sport of Pickleball and to be honest, I wasn’t very good.

The best part of the past year was that I have been home every day. No travel, no late nights, no dinner appointments. The pandemic allowed me to be home. So, I had a choice. I could either sit and just watch the depressing news or I could go out and learn something new.

And for me, that something new was Pickleball.

If you have not heard about this sport, you really need to check it out. At first, I heard it was just for retired people, but once I got into it, I realized how great and popular it is. Pickleball is a game played with a wooden paddle and a wiffleball on what looks like a miniature tennis court. The game is fast paced and if you want to be good you need to play with patience.

What I found out was that at the beginning, I was not very good. In fact, I kind of sucked. But the more I played, the better I got. The more I got hooked, low and behold, the better I got.

I think this is the perfect metaphor for life. We are so afraid to be bad at something that we never try. We are afraid we will either embarrass ourselves or we won’t look good. But if we have that attitude how can we ever get better? If we just keep doing what we’re good at we will miss out on some really cool opportunities. I can’t image where I would be if I never picked up a Pickleball paddle.

Next time you want to learn something new, have the courage to suck at it and you will be amazed at what new things you can learn.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
