We’ve all heard the saying, “Pick your battles.” I’m not sure who said it first, but it is very wise advice.
The challenge we have in business, and in life, is that we want to have our opinions heard. When people don’t agree with us, we want to battle them in an effort to change their minds.
Is that the best thing to do? The wise person is the one who hears the other party out, understands what they are saying, and then makes up their mind. When we pick a battle, we are just trying to talk to be heard, but not really learning.
I know I struggle with this. At times I just want to be right. In the midst of the discussion, I find I am not truly listening. I am so busy working on my rebuttal that I never really hear the other person.
Next time someone says something you don’t agree with, take the time to understand what they are saying and decide whether this is the battle you want to pick.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
