R&D - Rip Off and Duplicate

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

I was at a conference and the president of this company was on stage talking about one of his secrets to success and it has become one of my favorite lines: R&D, rip off and duplicate.

He explained that everyone needs to be out studying what successful people and companies are doing. In studying them you can learn about what practices work and which ones don’t. When you see something great, then you need to replicate it.

I am not talking about blatant coping or plagiarizing, but what I am talking about is using great ideas that people have put out in the public domain.

Whether it’s leadership ideas, customer service tips, or just a way of doing business, don’t be shy. Mimicking is a form of flattery and the more things we do well the better we all will be. I’m sure the person you learned from will appreciate the compliment.

Most people don’t know it but Sam Walton, yes, the same Sam that built Walmart into such a big success, did it by learning from Kmart. He met with their executives to see what they were doing great and built his company on some of the lessons he learned.

So, go ahead and do some R&D. You’ll be amazed to see the improvements you can make on what others have done before you.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
