Do you ever find yourself trying to solve a problem and the minute you stop thinking about it the answer comes to you?
Something happens in our brains when we are trying to solve a problem. Our left-brain is highly engaged and takes over control. Since the left-brain is the analytical side, it tries to solve the problem in a very systematic way. The challenge is that you need some help from your right-brain, the creative side. You need to think differently about the problem, but the left side won’t let the right side take over.
The issue is the more you fight with yourself to solve the problem, the more the left side of the brain takes over. In actuality, what we need to do in these moments is get the right side of the brain involved.
How do we do this? It’s simple. Stop thinking about the problem! It’s that easy.
I know that is easier said than done, but yes, stop thinking about it and let the problem rest. What will happen is when you least expect it, bam, the answer will come to you.
Did you know that J.K. Rowling said she was suddenly struck by the idea for Harry Potter while on a train ride?
You too have experienced this phenomenon. One morning in the shower when you are relaxed and just enjoying the hot water falling on your head. Bam, the answer to one of your problems suddenly appears.
We think it is coincidence, but it really isn’t. What's happening is by relaxing, your right-brain is able to takeover, which is the creative side of the brain. When the right side of the brain starts working, we stop thinking with so much detail and begin to think about possibilities and new ways to solve the problem.
Next time you are trying to solve a problem stop thinking about it! When you least expect it the answer will come.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
