Every year as Advoco produces our annual batch of wine, my business partner, Paul, declares it “the best ever.” I just love that line because it says that we just keep getting better.
That is what business and personal growth is all about.
How do we get better?
To get better, we don’t need to focus on how we compare to others or how we are going to conquer something. Instead, our focus needs to be on how we can beat our prior best.
“Best ever,” may be a simple saying, but it continually reminds us what is important. It reminds us to become a better version of ourselves.
I heard a great story about this topic and one of my favorite fast-food chains. As his team was worrying over their competition, Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, gave some sage advice about how they were going to grow the company. The team was going back and forth over strategies their competitors were utilizing and finally, Truett had enough. He pounded his fist on the table and proclaimed, “If we just get better our customers will demand we get bigger.” And that is what this is all about.
Stop chasing other people and stop comparing yourself to them. If you just focus on yourself and getting better, people will demand that you get bigger. And when you do, you can honestly say, “That was my best ever!”
