The "F Bomb"

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

I’m sure I know what you’re thinking about with this title. Is he really going to talk about that word? And how does the “F Bomb” have anything to do with leadership?

When I talk about the “F Bomb,” here, I am talking about the four-lettered word fair. Gotcha – bet that wasn’t the word you had in your head.

Fair is a word used all the time in negotiations and discussions when people are trying to get their way. They might say something like, “I just want what’s fair.”

When you hear this “F Bomb,” it is usually a bad thing. That’s because the opposite of fair is unfair, and no one wants to be unfair. When someone uses the word fair, they could be accusing you of not treating them like they believe they should be treated.

To understand, pay attention to how they use the word. Listen to the inflection in their voice. This will be a good indication of whether they truly believe you are not treating them fairly, or if they are using it as a tactic to get what they want.

It is important that you understand why they feel this way. It is the only way you really know if you are being “unfair” or there is something else that needs to be addressed.

Next time someone drops the “F Bomb” make sure you truly understand the context in which it is being used. It can save you in a relationship, or a lot of money if you are in a negotiation.

Until next time….I’m Marty, make every minute count.
