They say a good name is more powerful than riches; that a person’s name is the greatest connection to their own identity and individuality. Our name is at the root of who we are. When someone remembers our name after meeting us, we feel respected and more important. It makes a positive and lasting impression on us.
But this brings me to a question: as leaders do we believe the way we act and lead our people is a reflection on us and our name?
Our name can be our most powerful brand if we act accordingly. But so many leaders act in a way that does not enrich their name. Instead, it makes people not respect their name.
One of my most memorable moments was the naming of our first born. As our daughter was born, I still remember the doctor looking over to me and my wife asking if we had a name picked out. As parents, we all know we have spent countless hours thinking about names for our children and we are prepared for this inevitable question.
But in that moment in the delivery room, I realized how important this name would be. This name was our child’s legacy and would be the most precious gift we could give her. In that moment, the world seemed to stand still as I contemplated this important task.
Yes, our names are greater than any riches we could have and they truly reflect on who we are. The question for each of us to answer is, are we living up to our legacy? Are we doing everything we can to bring honor and respect to that name.
Next time you do something, remember that your actions do and will have an impact on your name. Then, consider if that action is consistent with what you want people to say about you when they speak your name.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
