Think Of The Possibilities

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

I was reading a book called The Art of Possibility. In the book, the authors talked about how substituting one simple word can change the outcome of our situation. One simple substitution.

They explain that if you substitute “but” in a sentence with “and,” you can shift your thinking and look for the possibilities in a situation.

For example: I’m on vacation, but it’s raining. This sounds like it’s going to be a terrible day.

Now substitute the “but” with “and.”

I’m on vacation and it’s raining. Think of all the things I get to do today. I can read a book, write another Marty’s Minute, or do whatever I want.

The power in having options is so much more exciting than the downside of the “but” ruining your day.

We are finalizing our project, but there are new specifications. Yikes.

Or, we are finalizing our configuration and there are some specifications. Wow, some new ideas coming in!

In any situation the “but” can affect your attitude. Just by changing it for “and” you can see a whole new world of possibilities. This allows you to take what appears to be a negative and make it a positive.

I’m sitting here at the airport and my flight is delayed. I guess I get to write another Marty’s Minute.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
