Wouldn’t it be so simple if answering just two questions could change your life and your career trajectory?
I’ve got some good news for you. These questions exist and answering them can change everything for you!
I just finished reading the book Know What You’re For by Jeff Henderson. In the book he asks readers to answer two simple questions:
What do you want to be known for?
What are you known for?
Take a minute and ask yourself these two questions.
What do you, as an individual or leader, want to be known for? This question cuts through all the noise and challenges you to dig deep to answer how you want to live. It makes you reflect on how you want to act and what you want to be known for.
What is so great about this question is it puts the ownness on us. It’s our purpose. No excuses, no abdicating to someone else. It’s up to us to answer the question.
But the second question gets harder. What are you known for? Are you living the life you said you wanted to live? Are you acting in accordance to your plan or ignoring that and doing things you should not be doing? How do other people perceive you?
Something special happens when your answer to these questions matches what others around you say. You’ve won the lottery because who you think you are, and who others see you as, matches. When your answers sync up with what your colleagues, your peers, and your family say about you, Jeff Henderson says, this is the secret to growth.
There it is. Two simple questions that can change your career, your leadership brand, and your life. Yes, it really is that that simple and yes, it’s also very hard.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
