What Are You Afraid Of?

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

What is your greatest fear? This was the question the coach asked his basketball players in the movie Coach Carter. His players were stumped. What exactly was he asking them?

This can be a hard question for most people to answer. But we all have fears: the fear of failure, the fear of financial ruin, the fear of being laughed at, or being looked down upon.

But we didn’t have these fears when we were younger. Except for maybe what was under the bed or in the closet. We weren’t afraid when we were younger because we had a lot less to lose.

While fear can be real, we typically use it as a defense mechanism to protect us from failure. Fear can never go away, but we can learn to dance with it.

When we accept our fears, we can begin to do our best work.

In the movie, Coach Carter continues asking his players what they are afraid of. At one point, one of the players recites a quote from Marianne Williamson:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?”

We are all powerful beyond measure if we just let ourselves be. Fear keeps us from being great, from being brilliant, from being fabulous.

So, put your fears away and show the world who you really are.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
