What Really Matters?

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

I have fallen in love with the word matters. It’s one of those words that I am starting to see everywhere.

When you look up the definition of matter, used as a verb it means “to be of importance.”

When something matters, it is important to you. My kids matter, my spouse matters, my friends matter, and the people around me matter.

But when you dig into the word it can take on a much deeper meaning. It is self-reflective and causes you to think about what is important to you.

For instance, right before I joined Advoco I was really struggling to find meaning. I remember coming back from a business trip and saying to myself, “What in the hell am I doing with my life?" In that moment, I started thinking about life and what really matters when it's all said and done.

It’s easy to say or think about what you want, but unless you truly know what you value, the wants can seem meaningless.

The sum of our lives isn't how perfectly we can handle every item on our lists, or even what's on the list to begin with. What really matters is the impact we have on others.

Lisa McCloud said, “It isn't always easy to remember what matters most. Especially when the pace of our lives leaves us little time to even think about it. But we deserve more than just going through the motions of life, we deserve to live our lives knowing that at our funeral everyone will be saying "Oh what a difference she made to me.””

If you want to be busy, then keep ticking items off your to do list. But If you truly want to be happy, focus on making a difference – let the people around you know they matter.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
