Who Are You Talking To

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

How many conversations do you average per day?

My friend posed this question to me after he heard me talking on the phone repeatedly throughout the day. If you ask my wife, she would probably laugh and say “who knows but he never stops.”

It's an interesting question because so much of what we learn comes from our conversations with others. The real thing to consider is who is the most important person you talk to each day? I think that when asked this question people would say their parents, or spouse, or kids.

I believe the most important person you need to talk to every day is yourself. I don’t mean this in an odd way, but what you say to yourself can have a dramatic effect on how you see the world. What discussions are you having with yourself? Is your inner dialogue positive and building you up? Or is it negative, pointing out flaws and missteps?

As my mentor Zig Ziglar used to say, if you have “stinking thinking” then you will have negative outcomes.

The best part of the conversation with yourself is that you can control it. You can tell yourself all the good that you have done and will do. You write the narrative so why not write it with you winning?

I must warn you – don’t fall in the trap of "should-ing" yourself. I "should" be doing this or I "should" be doing that. The greatest way to bring yourself down is to "should" on yourself.

I believe today the most important person you are going to talk to is you. And in that conversation, tell yourself how good you are and how great today is going to be!

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
