Have you ever wondered why your customer, or maybe your teammate didn't care about a problem as much as you thought they should?
But really, why should they care about your product, service, company, or idea? They care about themselves – their hopes, dreams, and quality of life. If you want someone to care, teach them how your product or idea will improve their life and then you’ll have their attention.
Steve Jobs once said that people don’t want to know about computers, they want to know how computers will help them live better. “You’ve got to start with the customer experience and work back toward the technology–not the other way around,” he explained.
So how do we get the other person to care as much as we do?
We have to start by sitting down with them and getting to know them personally. Get to know what hopes or dreams they have. Work to understand what makes them tick, what gets them excited. Once you have that knowledge, you can begin to form the right partnership that can lead to a successful outcome.
Picture this: you are discussing a problem and just seem to be missing the mark with the other person. Now you are both frustrated. We’ve all been in this situation before. Instead of blaming the other person for the lack of understanding, dig deeper into what they are thinking and feeling. Ask yourself, why should they care? When you ask yourself this, I am sure you will come to some common ground.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
