We all remember playing in the school yard as we played pickup games. You know the scene - two captains were chosen and then one by one they picked their team.
Remember the stress you felt over whether you were going to be picked or not? What number you got picked at said a lot about what other people thought of your skills and your ability to be a contributor to the team.
As I look at how businesses operate, I see the same school yard choosing going on.
We have leaders and bosses making decision every day about who they want on their team. Who they think will be the best contributor and help make the team successful.
What are you doing to get picked? What are you doing to make yourself a better teammate? Why should the captain pick you first?
Are you doing things like reading up on industry trends, finding out how to better yourself by listening to leadership podcasts, and working to make your team better?
The real question you need to ask yourself is: Would you be your first pick?
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
